Nyah (short for Nyahline) is the titular character and main protagonist of the animated webseries Nyah Has an Adventure. Nyah was created by Jordyn-Rae Morrison, with the suggestions of other people from Raffles College of Design and Commerce, and first brought to the attention of Darien Brice Dickinson after being drawn on the whiteboard at that college in 2015. It is currently unknown if there are any earlier drawings of the character.
In the series, Nyah is first brought to the attention of human society when she screams in pain after an arrow is shot into her head. Taken from her rainforest home, she is forced to live in the city where she meets her three best friends: Lone, Arph and Skye. Despite the title of the series, Nyah is the least adventurous of the group of four, and she would much rather stay in her apartment and cook/entertain in the downstairs Sushi Bar and Grill than roam around looking for things to do.

Nyah was born in 1998 at the Wyoming, NSW rainforest as a rare tadpole parasite, the natural result of "incompatible DNA" between a crow and a shark. Tadpole parasites need to find a host body within 24 hours of birth in order to survive, as they do not have a mouth to feed with, which is why they are so rare. Luckily for Nyah, she stumbled across the recently-deceased body of a human girl named Samantha.
Nyah continued to live in the rainforest by herself in secret, slowly evolving and morphing her host body until it looked human no longer, and living off fish from the river and camp supplies that people left behind. Some creatures would discover her hideout when they needed shelter from the rain, but they would all set off on their way without alerting anyone else to her location.
In the mid 2010s, Nyah was fishing for food until she was struck in the head by a stray arrow. Her scream of pain alerted nearby campers and she was brought to a government facility for adapting creatures to human society, where she was paired up with Lone, a penguin creature.
In her most prominent form featured throughout most of the series, Nyah (like most creatures) is in the shape of a human, but with a few minor differences.
She has large, bulbous tar black eyes, and an arrow running diagonally through the middle of her head. The arrow that is embedded in her head throughout most of the series is not the same one that got shot into her, but rather a solidified extension of the dark, gooey substance that makes up her parasite form.
Her skin is not white - the white coloring comes from her feathers, she has flower petal-like eyelashes, a pointy beak-like nose, gills in her neck for breathing underwater, and her usual attire is a single grey sleeveless shirt. She tries not to wear pants as most pants don't have a hole for her large tadpole-like tail. She has sharp teeth, and her hands and feet also end in sharp claws.
Skills and abilities
Nyah has a penchant for fishing and cooking, as those are two of the only things she could do while hiding in the rainforest during her early years. When speaking, Nyah can only say her own name, or in rare cases add "ny-" to the front of basic English words (for example, "yes" would be "nyes"), and somehow all creatures can understand exactly what she means. The English-speaking creatures may sometimes need to translate Nyah's speech for humans.
When she is in danger, she will not hesitate to use her tail as a club or her sharp claws to slice at things like swords. The goo that makes up her inner parasite form can also be made toxic at will and, only if absolutely necessary will she use it as she can't really let anyone know that she is a parasite. Nyah is a very fast runner, and can also balance on her tail or swing from it, to dodge attacks and also to entertain on-stage at her sushi bar and grill.
Nyah is a happy-go-lucky individual, most of the time. When sad, Nyah will morph the shape of the bottom of her eyes to resemble tears, as she has an inability to cry. Nyah sometimes puts on a bored/tired expression for comedic purposes. When angry, Nyah will increase the sharpness of her teeth and act defensive.
Nyah's first known appearance was created by Jordyn-Rae Morrison during "The Moving Image" subject at Raffles College of Design and Commerce. Other students drew their iterations of the character on the whiteboard too, including Kevin Daniel Israel, who drew one of the larger drawings in the middle of this image. Darien Brice Dickinson decided to sketch out a comic of Nyah's reaction to the arrow being shot into her head, instead of adding onto the drawings on the whiteboard. This lead to a currently on-hiatus webcomic that is also titled Nyah Has an Adventure. Even though the comic has the same name as the animated series, they are entirely unrelated, separate entities. To help distinguish between the webcomic and animated series of the same name, the comic has a completely different story and a more chibi-like design for Nyah.
According to Morrison, Nyah's design is black and white because this is reminiscent of old cartoons from the 1920s. She has also described Nyah as a "mistake", which is the reason why the series' opening titles includes the credit "Based on the mistake by Jordyn-Rae Morrison", instead of "Based on a character design by Jordyn-Rae Morrison". Nyah has gone through a number of different design changes, most notably with her hair, claws, legs and feet.
Nyah, like every other character, is temporarily voiced by Darien Brice Dickinson during the storyboard/animatic phase of the animation process.
In the future, Nyah will be voiced by [...].
The decision to make Nyah a parasite was inspired by what looked like goo dripping out of Nyah's gills in a sketch by Jordyn-Rae Morrison. Nyah was also confirmed to be half-bird for the series, not because of her claws, but simply due to the need to get the word "birb" somewhere in the series. The bird chosen to be related to Nyah was a crow, due to other works of art by Morrison involving crows, and Nyah's colour scheme. Even though Nyah is half-shark, she only has one row of teeth, but they do grow back if knocked out.
Skye is first introduced to Nyah because she is Arph's next door neighbour.
Miss Farewell is Samantha's mother. She tries to kill Nyah at every opportunity, because she thinks Nyah has something to do with Samantha's death.
Hayn, Enol, Hpra and Eyks
Hayn, Enol, Hpra and Eyks are creatures from the antiverse, first introduced in episode 14 of season 2. They try to make Nyah's life as miserable as possible before they have to get back to their own dimension.
